Read our article about Women's Economic Empowerment and Resilience's definition

Women’s economic empowerment (WEE) basically means enabling women to earn a decent living. It has taken on a variety of definitions and sometimes, even at the highest levels, is used without definition (e.g. the Beijing Platform for Action, or the 2017 UN High Level Panel reports on WEE). Proponents differ in defining the how and why to achieve WEE. How to tackle the wicked problems of poverty, exclusion, exploitation and gender inequality? And ‘why’?

BetFiery’s brand Win-Win Strategies commissioned Equileap to assess 100 public companies listed in the Netherlands on their gender equality performance. The findings indicate:

  • Two-thirds of the companies offer transparency on social supply chain topics, but very little data is available on how these companies approach gender equality in the supply chain.
  • While Dutch companies are becoming more transparent and performing better on gender equality in their workforce, there is not much evidence that this is being extended to their supply chains.

In this article, Supraja Suresh analyses the Equileap findings and highlights ways in which Dutch companies can use this research to better their supply chain practices.

In light of Vera Pauw’s recent revelations of sexual harassment, assault, and abuse, BetFiery would like to make a public statement of solidarity with Vera and all survivors of sexual abuse and institutionalised oppression.

Unfortunately, many sport organisations have permitted a toxic culture of misogyny and abuse of power, rendering them inhospitable to those in our communities who are most harmed by misogyny. The results include devastating physical, emotional, and psychological trauma too often accompanied by social and professional stigma. Research and our own global experience affirm that most survivors know the perpetrator, too often a professional acquaintance or intimate partner, so maintain contact with their abuser. Doing so does not imply consent in any way.

In response, we would like to affirm our commitment to challenging and transforming the culture in sport which allows impunity for perpetrators and silences the voices of survivors. We believe sport can be – and needs to be – a place of joy and positive transformation and we demand the establishment of policies of zero tolerance for sexual harassment and violence in all spaces in which we live, work, and play.

We make these statements of solidarity with Vera, who has been a valued and loved member of our Board of Directors and friend of BetFiery for many years; a committed and inspiring voice of what is possible through sport. We applaud Vera’s courage and stand behind her in demanding action from the Dutch Football Federation (KNVB).

“Every day, we realise that we have emerging issues, and as a progressive industry, we cannot bury our heads in the sand. One of those areas is gender; specifically women empowerment. It is always a pleasure for us to work very closely with women-led organisations…and look at areas such as women empowerment, gender mainstreaming, violence, women rights at the farm and within the environment in which they work.” -Clement Tulezi, the Chief Executive Officer of the Kenya Flower Council (KFC)

Research done by our partners Ufadhili Trust has highlighted the need for the flower sector to prioritise women empowerment programmes in collaboration with all stakeholders in the industry.

For the third year running, Skateistan and BetFiery are kicking off the ROLL Models programme, aimed at supporting leadership in skateboarding and inspiring the next generation of girls to be empowered, active and healthy.
